"The camaraderie, the laughs, the jokes. Those are the moments you cherish - around the fire, having a beer, sharing a laugh."

- Rodney S, New York

The Pangea Rally is South Africa’s 2,100 km motorcycle rally spanning the ancient Cape Fold Mountains, a range more than 330 million years old and among the oldest on Earth. Long before the Alps or Rockies rose, these mountains shaped the southern edge of Africa, linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Karoo and beyond. Twisted, weathered, and magnificent, they set the stage for one of the continent’s most extraordinary motorcycle adventures.

Ride across South Africa’s Western Cape, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean, through the wild heart of the Cape Fold Mountains. Experience every landscape in one journey, dramatic peaks, open desert, and sweeping coastal roads.

This is more than a ride. It’s a 2,100 km motorcycle rally through one of the oldest mountain chains on Earth.

BEYOND THE RIDE. BEYOND THE MAP.

The Rally Experience

The Pangea Rally is South Africa’s premier long-distance motorcycle rally. It begins with an optional Prologue Ride on arrival day, followed by an epic 2,100 km journey over 6 days, crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and back.

Starting at the foot of Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain, the route arcs across the Western Cape, from crashing Atlantic shores through ancient mountain ranges, high-altitude passes, desert tracks, and lush coastal forests, culminating in the Cape Winelands.

Crossing more than 20 mountain passes and reaching altitudes over 1,500 metres, the rally traverses wild, raw terrain that has remained unchanged for millennia. Riding here is not just a thrill, it’s a privilege.

Motorcycles Welcome

Open to motorcycles fit for adventure: scramblers, modern classics, and adventure bikes. If it can handle distance, dirt, and has vaguely knobbly tyres, it’s welcome.

The Journey

The adventure unfolds over six carefully curated stages, each bringing new terrain, stories, and challenges. Scout marshals ride ahead to ensure safe passage, while backup support (including medics, mechanics, and recovery teams) is always near but never intrusive.

Rider Comfort
At the end of each day, riders regroup in comfort and recharge for the next ride. Gear is transported ahead, and every rider receives a custom Pangea Rally Pack, which includes:
- A rally jersey
- Hydration pack

- Rally Numbers
- A rugged waterproof hold-all

Accommodation is provided in luxury canvas rally camps, featuring warm beds, linen, and chef-prepared meals rooted in South African flavour.

The Spirit of the Rally
This is not a race. It’s a journey across terrain, time, and your own limits. Ocean to ocean. Over stone, dust, and sea.

ADVENTURE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Riders arrive in Cape Town, the starting point of the Pangea Rally, one day before the journey begins. The evening includes a Rider Briefing, Welcome Dinner, and a fireside kickoff under the African sky.

Prologue Ride: The Beginning of Adventure
Early arrivals can join the optional Prologue Ride, a short morning trip to Cape Point, the dramatic cornerstone of the Cape Fold Mountains, offering a ceremonial launch and preview of the terrain to come.

Bike Preparation and Rentals
-Riders bringing their own motorcycles can park in a secure Parc Fermé for pre-rally inspection and Day 1 readiness.
-For international participants or those without bikes, trusted motorcycle rental partners ensure a seamless experience from arrival to departure.

Rally Briefings and Support
Each evening features a stage briefing outlining the next day’s route and waypoints.

While the Pangea Rally is not a race, timing is tracked for rhythm, not speed. Riders earn points for precision, not pace.

A dedicated rally crew of medics, mechanics, marshals, and logistics staff trails the route, providing real-time assistance when required. Every stage is pre-scouted to ensure safe and clear navigation.

Accommodation and Dining
Riders stay in luxury canvas rally camps, with warm beds and linen set in breathtaking locations that change nightly, from secluded Indian Ocean beaches to starlit Karoo desert clearings.

Evenings include:
- Chef-prepared meals inspired by South African flavours
- Hearty breakfasts and trail-ready packed lunches
- Occasional glasses of Cape wine shared around the fire

The Pangea Experience
Each day ends not with a podium, but with stories, laughter, and camaraderie.

From mountain pool swims to stargazing and fireside tales, perhaps even dinner alongside a Dakar legend, every moment celebrates shared adventure.

The road demands much, but it gives more: friendships, memories, and stories that will outlast the dust.

The Route

The Pangea Rally follows a carefully planned route across the Western Cape of South Africa, combining iconic tar passes, remote gravel tracks, and dramatic landscapes, all supported by expertly managed logistics.

Each of the six rally stages is designed to offer challenge, variety, and reward, giving riders the chance to experience the full diversity of the region:
- Coastal curves along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans
- Desert flats and mountains passes across the Karoo
- Mountain climbs through the Cape Fold Mountains
- A spectacular finish in the Cape Winelands

Throughout the journey, safety is paramount. Dedicated support and recovery teams remain close by at every stage, ensuring you can focus entirely on what matters most: the ride.

We launch from our base in Noordhoek, riding along Chapman’s Peak and around Table Mountain before heading into the Southern Cape mountains. A series of scenic tar passes transitions into light gravel as we make our way to our first overnight camp near Swellendam.

Day 3: The High Point

We take on the majestic Swartberg Pass, the rally’s highest elevation and one of the continent’s great rides. After cresting the pass, we continue eastward, eventually descending Prince Alfred's Pass to reach our coastal camp at the Indian Ocean.

Day 4: Desert Return

We climb over the Outeniqua Mountains and ride onto the vast plateau of the Karoo, riding through rugged semi-desert terrain and open valleys. A short liaison section leads us to our next camp near the Tankwa Karoo, at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains.

Day 5: The Cederberg Loop

This is our deep Cederberg day. We head north to climb over the Pakhuis Pass, looping through high-altitude wilderness filled with ancient rock formations and vast horizons. The route circles back to our Krom River camp, nestled in the heart of the mountains.

Day 6: The Final Ascent

We exit the Cederberg and cross the open desert plains of the Tankwa Karoo, before re-entering the mountains for one final push. We ride Bainskloof Pass and Franschhoek Pass, finishing in the vineyards of Franschhoek for our final camp and rally celebration.

FAQ

  • No. But it is a timed event with multiple checkpoints each day. The winning team matches our forecast “ideal time” for completion. This is a journey of discovery, endurance, and camaraderie—not a competition.

  • The rally is open to experienced riders with a passion for adventure. We welcome both solo participants and groups.

  • Adventure motorcycles capable of long-distance touring across varied terrain are recommended. Off-road tyres are essential. Whilst two-thirds of route is on tar, and the third off-road part is definitely “approachable”, this capability is required. Conditions are variable and preparation is key.

  • Cape Town International has direct connections from major hubs including London (LHR), Amsterdam (AMS), Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Paris (CDG), Zurich (ZRH), Istanbul (IST), Doha (DOH), Dubai (DXB), Atlanta (ATL), Washington D.C. (IAD), New York (JFK), and São Paulo (GRU). Most flights from Europe, the US East Coast, and the Middle East are overnight.
